Three kinds of work
Installing what you bought. IKEA, Home Depot, semi-custom — assembled, leveled, anchored to studs, doors adjusted so the gaps are even.
Fitting to the room. Closets in a 1920s Palo Alto house are small, shallow and out of square. A stock system doesn't drop in; it gets cut, scribed and filled to the walls. Original built-ins are usually worth keeping — new hardware and adjusted doors often do more than replacement.
Pieces made to size. A single shelf, a filler panel, a shoe rack for an odd corner — built on site to fit. Sean installs and fits cabinets; he doesn't build full custom cabinetry from scratch.
Eichler closets
Closets are part of the paneled wall, with sliding doors on the original tracks. Replacing the doors means matching the panel lines; a modern mirrored bypass door changes the room. Inside, the shallow depth needs a system designed for it, not a big-box kit.

Questions people in Palo Alto ask
- Do we need a permit?
- Installing cabinets and closet systems generally doesn't require a building permit in Palo Alto. Changes to plumbing, electrical, walls or structure may — Sean will tell you before the job starts.
- Can you install cabinets we bought ourselves?
- Yes. Send the plan or a photo of the boxes.
- Our closet doors keep coming off the track.
- Usually worn rollers or a bent track. Repair is cheap; replacement only if the doors are damaged.
- How long does it take?
- A closet system or a vanity is usually a day. A kitchen depends on the number of cabinets and the walls.
